MANUFACTURING PLANNER & STEEL PURCHASER, COLEFORD, GLOUCESTERSHIRE

We're looking for a Manufacturing Planner & Steel Purchaser to take ownership of production planning and material procurement across our manufacturing operation in Coleford, Gloucestershire.

A newly-created role, the successful candidate will oversee production scheduling, material availability, and workflow visibility. Reporting to the General Manager, you'll play a key role in ensuring materials are available when needed, production schedules remain achievable, and customer orders progress efficiently through the business.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

PRODUCTION PLANNING:

  • Own and manage production planning across all manufacturing departments, including steel processing, welding, paint, finishing and bracket shop operations.
  • Maintain accurate production schedules to ensure customer requirements and delivery dates are met.
  • Monitor work-in-progress and provide clear visibility of job status across the business.
  • Identify and resolve production bottlenecks, capacity issues and scheduling conflicts.
  • Re-prioritise schedules when urgent orders, delays or unforeseen issues arise.
  • Work closely with Production, Logistics and Administration teams to ensure plans remain realistic and achievable.
  • Produce planning reports and information to support operational decision-making.

PURCHASING & MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • Manage steel and material purchasing requirements in line with production demand.
  • Raise purchase orders and monitor supplier delivery performance.
  • Maintain appropriate stock levels while minimising excess inventory and waste.
  • Liaise with suppliers regarding lead times, shortages and delivery schedules.
  • Ensure materials are available to support production schedules and customer commitments.
  • Develop strong supplier relationships to improve service, reliability and responsiveness.

PROCESS IMPROVEMENT:

  • Develop and maintain robust, repeatable planning processes and procedures.
  • Ensure key planning knowledge and information is documented and easily accessible.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives across production planning and procurement activities.
  • Help drive improvements in schedule adherence, material availability and operational efficiency.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in production planning, scheduling, material control or procurement within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience of ERP/MRP systems (EFACS or similar would be advantageous).
  • Good Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with office-based and shop-floor teams.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Confidence working independently and taking ownership of key business processes.

PACKAGE:

  • 28-36K depending on experience
  • Monday-Friday with the option for flexi time/compressed hours
