People across Brighton & Hove are being given a unique opportunity to see the next stage of our seafront lighting restoration project up close.
One of the new lanterns, which will be fitted to the restored and refurbished lampposts and brackets, will be going on public display at the Jubilee Library, Jubilee St, Brighton and Hove on 6th October 2025. It’s a chance for people to see the lanterns, made to respect the historical significance and design of the original manufacturer, before they’re erected high above the seafront promenade.
If you’d like to see the new lanterns, you can see them between 6th October and 26th October 2025 at the Jubilee Library.
PRESERVING THE CITY'S HERITAGE
Having worked closely with Historic England, a project to restore 80 Grade II listed lampposts is beginning with the removal of the first 5.
Damaged by decades of exposure to the harsh conditions and salty air, the columns, brackets and lanterns are being restored in a way that preserves their historic look and feel.
The lantern going on display has been made by lighting experts CU Phosco while the new columns will be restored by Cast Iron Welding Services.
Once each is ready, the 5 columns will be placed back in their original positions.
Councillor Birgit Miller, Cabinet member for Culture, Heritage and Tourism, said: “This is a great chance for people to see the skill and expertise that goes into producing these bespoke lanterns up close and I’m really looking forward to seeing it myself.
“This is an exciting project which will help improve the look and feel of our fabulous seafront, while preserving its long heritage.
“The lighting is such an iconic feature of our seafront and deserves to be looking its best. I’d encourage everyone to come down and have a look at these amazing lanterns.”
