LIGHTING UP OYO STATE: HIGH MAST FLOODLIGHTING FOR KEY INTERCHANGES IN IBADAN, NIGERIA

As the capital and largest city of Oyo State and one of Nigeria’s most populous urban centres Ibadan plays a central role in regional commerce, education, and transport. Known for its distinctive “brown roofs” and rich cultural heritage, the city faces growing demands on its infrastructure as its population and economy continue to expand. Modernising key transport routes through improved lighting is a vital part of meeting these needs.

To demonstrate the benefits of LED high mast lighting, the Oyo State Government launched a pilot project focused on three major interchanges: Bridge 1 and Bridge 6 on the Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road, and the Onipepeye Interchange on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. These locations experience high traffic volumes and were identified as priority areas for visibility and safety improvements.

CU Phosco was appointed through its Nigerian representative to support the project from lighting design through to on-site installation supervision. The work was delivered in collaboration with Systems Academy Limited, who carried out the civil works and full commissioning.

SOLUTION

The project scope included:

  • Design and supply of 43 x 30-metre high masts, equipped with FL820-2 LED floodlights
  • Bespoke lighting design to match site layouts and light level requirements
  • Installation supervision by CU Phosco’s UK export team, working alongside local partners

The FL820-2 floodlights were specifically selected for their high-output, low-glare performance, making them ideal for large-scale infrastructure lighting. Each floodlight features a fully cowled design with full cut-off optics, which precisely directs light to target areas, reducing upward light spill and glare.

With lumen maintenance of L92 at 100,000 hours (25°C) and efficacy up to 154 lm/W, the FL820-2 delivers long-term energy efficiency and reliability. The floodlights are UL accredited, suitable for -40°C to +40°C operating conditions and designed to withstand harsh outdoor environments, making them particularly well suited to projects across Nigeria.

“This project showcases exactly what the FL820-2 is built for,” said Bola Adebanjo, Regional Manager for CU Phosco Nigeria.

“Our floodlights are fully cowled to offer full cut-off and come with a wide range of optics to provide optimal coverage. They direct light exactly where it’s needed, no waste, no glare, and they’re built to last in tough conditions. We’re proud to have helped Oyo State demonstrate how this technology can modernise public lighting and improve road safety.”

RESULTS & BENEFITS

The high mast lighting installation has significantly improved visibility at all three locations, contributing to safer roads, stronger night-time security, and a more welcoming environment for drivers and pedestrians alike. The project was completed efficiently and with minimal disruption, marking the start of a promising long-term relationship between CU Phosco and the Oyo State Government.

A spokesperson for the Oyo State Government commented:

“The installation of high mast floodlights on the Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road Bridges 1 and 6 and Onipepeye Bridge is now complete, improving night-time visibility, enhancing road safety, boosting security, and adding to the city’s night-time appeal for residents and commuters.”
