RETROFITTING DUBLIN AIRPORT WITH ADVANCED HIGH-MAST LED LIGHTING SOLUTIONS
More than 400 million passengers have travelled through Dublin Airport since its first flight took off in 1940. In alignment with its vision to sustainably grow to accommodate 40 million passengers annually, the airport initiated a project to reconfigure its apron layouts for greater efficiency. This provided an opportunity to upgrade the high mast lighting technology to more efficient, energy-saving LEDs.
CU Phosco Lighting worked with Sabre Electrical Services to undertake the lighting and mast design, supplying a combination of FL800R and FL810 floodlights, mounted at various heights but mainly 25m masts.
SOLUTION
The FL800R LED system introduces an innovative approach to apron floodlighting, allowing modules to be grouped in triple, or quad configurations. These Floodlights are mounted on masts with full azimuth rotation and tilt functions, enabling precise positioning. It features the AeroFlow® Cooling System for exceptional thermal management, maximising heat dissipation and allowing for a compact design that can be retrofitted onto existing masts. Lumileds LUXEON® M LEDs deliver high lumen output to the apron with minimal depreciation over their lifespan, significantly reducing energy and operating costs for the airport.
Similarly, the FL810 LED area floodlighting system’s design is ideal areas where high levels of lighting are needed for safety. It offers superior luminaire efficacy of up to 141lm/W, high colour rendering, low glare, and is Dark-Sky friendly.
CU Phosco Lighting supplied masts and 261 floodlights (FL800R and FL810) to ensure the lighting installation met the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex standards. The installation achieved the recommended average illuminances for aircraft stands and other apron areas ensuring compliance with horizontal and vertical illuminance requirements.
RESULTS & BENEFITS
The advanced LED floodlights provided by CU Phosco Lighting resulted in compliant lighting designs, significant energy savings exceeding 50%, and improved light levels. The retrofit solution offers easy maintenance and adheres to weight limitations on existing structures.
