C.U. Phosco has a long-standing connection with tennis, with roots going back more than a century. In 1925, the Marques family purchased our Great Amwell site, known locally as The Amwell Club, which was famous for its tennis and cricket lawns. A century on, that affinity for the sport continues through CU Phosco’s support for community clubs that bring people together through tennis.
Most recently, C.U. Phosco has supported Bridgend Tennis Club in South Wales through the installation of six new FL820 floodlights and Forest Columns to courts 3 and 4, and courts 5 and 6. The upgrade allows the club to extend playing hours and offer safe, well-lit facilities throughout the year, including during the darker winter months.
Bridgend Tennis Club is one of the fastest growing clubs in Wales and has strong links with local schools, giving children the opportunity to play tennis for free and take part in a sport they might not otherwise have access to.
The club also hosted the Welsh Open Championships in August 2025, marking a first for Bridgend Tennis Club and a significant milestone for the venue. Reliable floodlighting has played an important role in supporting the club’s ability to host competitive events and expand its programme of activities.
Bridgend Tennis Club recently shared its thanks for C.U. Phosco’s support, highlighting the impact of the new floodlighting on players of all ages. The club noted that the lighting has enabled tennis to be played year-round, even on the darkest winter evenings, and that hundreds of children on its junior programme can now train and enjoy the game safely into the evening. With both Bridgend Tennis Club and C.U. Phosco tracing their histories back more than 100 years, the partnership reflects a shared commitment to quality, longevity and supporting local communities.
Supporting community sport remains an important part of C.U. Phosco’s wider commitment to creating safer, more welcoming spaces through well designed lighting. From public realm and infrastructure to local sports facilities, the aim is the same. To help people use spaces confidently, safely and for longer, whatever the season.
