Bournemouth Rail - Catenary Lighting

Location: Bournemouth

Client: Network Rail

Products:

Objectives

Network Rail had a requirement to replace an old existing catenary system with NEW Columns and more efficient lanterns. The lighting design had to meet a customer specification with excellent light quality and uniformity. The main activities at the site were train and carriage maintenance requiring workers to walk on designated paths between the rail lines. No columns could be installed within the work area as these would have impinged on the kinematic envelope of the moving trains. The lighting solution was required to light the walkways without incurring shadowing from the train carriages which would be parked for maintenance. The light source needed to be energy efficient white light source with the long replacement periods to maximise the visibility during maintenance operations and to ensure train drivers have excellent conditions to recognise workers on the line.

Solutions

CU Phosco Lighting carried out surveys on the current system and offered a solution via CBG consultants which had to meet specific budgets. CU Phosco Lighting provided a full lighting design using the newest lamp technology of the Philips Cosmopolis lamp and gear to meet the desired lighting levels. The majority of luminaires lighting the tracks and walkways were mounted on 11 catenary systems aligned transverse to the track. The luminaires were pre-positioned to ensure no shadowing on the walkways. At the track intersections where there was no training parking, building mounted floodlights were used to provide area lighting over the whole intersection. Finally additional walkways along the outside edges of the site were lit using conventional column and P567 luminaire. However to maximise the life of the electronic gear, it was mounted in the cool environment in the base compartment of the column rather than in the lantern compartment.

CU Phosco provide a full turn key package with catenary lighting schemes.

Having completed the lighting design, CU Technical design engineers carried out full design and detailing work on the catenary masts and rigging. A full design submission was made to Network Rail for approvals prior to commencement of manufacturing.

The catenary equipment was manufactured by CU Westgate works along with lanterns and gear boxes wired at Phosco’s works in Ware.

The installation of the project was managed and implemented by CU Phosco’s Contract Division who carried out all assembly and erection work to budget and programme.

Response

Network Rail were very satisfied with the final installation at Bournemouth and since this project was completed, Network Rail have commissioned CU Phosco Lighting for several other lighting maintenance and replacement projects.

CU Phosco Lighting planned, designed, manufactured, delivered and installed a turn key installation for this rail maintenance depot using catenary lighting. A P567 lantern with foot was adapted for use for the catenary system utilising an existing product and re-designing it, to provide a suitable product.

Notice: All case study photos are wherever possible unmodified from those taken by the professional photographer. The only modification allowed is to remove temporary traffic management or road furniture that would not be present on completion of the installation works. No attempt has been made to adjust light levels or uniformities to enhance the photo appearance.
