Objectives

The objective of the project was to provide a white light solution with low energy efficiencies and minimal maintenance for luminaires in the conflict areas. The project had to incorporate the current Cornwall CMS system to maximise the control of lighting/energy usage accordingly. The areas to be lit was the Chiverton exchange roundabout on the A30 and the adjoining dual carriageway run-offs. The lighting standard to be achieved needed meet the standard/uniformity set out by the client. Passive safety was also an integral part of the project as 3 of the 4 exits were dual carriage ways and had little or no protection to either vehicles or columns in the event of an accident.

Solutions

CU Phosco's lighting design engineers worked in co-ordination with Cornwall CC to establish the most suitable product to be used on the project and designed according to he BS-EN standards. This was achieved by CU Phosco using the Ruud Ledway Road and Phosco P680 luminaires. After several design calculations and final approval these products were approved. As well as achieving the lighting standards, the columns had to be passively safe. We had to reverse engineer the columns and revise the lighting design to balance both standards to produce a column/luminaire combination to meet the required standard. (100LE3). Finally, the requirement for passively safe disconnection systems and retention sockets was required for ease of future maintenance in the conflict areas. We were able to meet the objectives with a single source supply of all products, co-ordinated and project managed by our Area Sales Manager Kevin Ridge.

Response

Glyn Williams of Cornwall County Council was very pleased with the final project completion and expressed how impressed he was with the lighting levels. He commented on how well Kevin Ridge had been able to co-ordinate the whole project from conception through to assisting SSE Lighting services on the installation and commissioning of the project.
