Client: Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council

Consultant: Gillespies Oxford

Civil Engineer: Birse Civils

Contractor: Amey Highways

Project Objective: To create a safer and more welcoming recreational Environment by utilizing white light in the regeneration of this specific pedestrian area.

Hayley Whittaker of CU Phosco Lighting was invited by Elizabeth Thomas of  Walsall MBC to assist in the design of the columns and lanterns for this project. There were further discussions and meetings with CU Phosco Technical department in respect of the light levels and overall concept, to ultimately meet the clients requirements.

Elizabeth Thomas, Walsall Council public lighting manager, said: "The original concept for Walsall's Civic Quarter project was designed by the architects Gillespies.  Working with the council's regeneration team and Birse Civil engineers, their main objective was to encourage the public to stay in the town centre after work and travel in at weekends.

"We aimed to help local businesses and Walsall town centre in promoting our strengths, welcoming newcomers and providing a much safer recreational environment for all.

"CU Phosco Lighting generated a full lighting design adhering to all of our project goals and provided advice in the more intricate areas.  We chose a white light source to ensure that the area would generate an open and relaxed atmosphere.

"Although the shape of the columns initially looked overpowering, they have now blended well into the street scene. The final installation has been extremely successful for the town and I am very proud to have been part of this first phase achievement."
